The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) provides the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant to eligible individuals. If your application for this grant was rejected, you have the right to appeal the decision. Follow these steps to begin the appeal process:

What You’ll Need

To initiate your appeal, you’ll need the following:

  1. South African ID Number: Your unique identification number is necessary for SASSA to locate your application and process your appeal.
  2. Phone Number Used During Application: Make sure to use the same phone number you provided when submitting your initial application. SASSA will send a One-Time PIN (OTP) to this number to verify your identity.

Before Appealing, Check Your SRD Application Status

Click the button below to see if your application has been rejected or is still under review. This will help you decide if an appeal is necessary.

Steps to Appeal

  1. Enter Your ID and Phone Number: Enter your South African ID number and the phone number used during your application carefully.
  2. Request Verification PIN: Click the button labeled “Send PIN” to request a One-Time PIN (OTP) for verification.
  3. Verify Your Identity: Once you receive the OTP via SMS, enter it in the designated field on the website to confirm your identity.
  4. Select Appeal Month(s): If applicable, choose the specific month(s) your application was rejected for from the dropdown menu.

Important Reminders

  • Appeal Timeframe: You can appeal a rejected application within 30 days, but no later than 90 days, after receiving the rejection notification. Appeals submitted outside this timeframe are unlikely to be considered.
  • Independent Review: Appeals are reviewed by the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA), not directly by SASSA.
  • Checking Appeal Status: You can return to the SASSA SRD Appeals webpage using the same steps to check the status of your appeal after submission. Enter your ID number and phone number to access the latest information.

We recommend keeping a copy of your appeal confirmation for your records. If you have any further questions or require assistance with the appeal process, you can contact the SASSA SRD Helpline.
